Asphalt vs. Concrete: Making the Right Choice
We offer both asphalt and concrete solutions to meet your needs. Asphalt is cost-effective and flexible, while concrete offers longevity and versatility. Our experts will guide you through the pros and cons, considering your specific requirements, budget, and local climate to help you make the best choice for your property.
Asphalt Driveways
- Cost-effective and quick to install
- Flexible and less prone to cracking in cold climates
- Easy to repair and resurface
- Dark color helps melt snow faster
Concrete Driveways
- Longer lifespan with proper maintenance
- Versatile design options (stamped, colored, textured)
- Light color reflects heat, ideal for warm climates
- Higher load-bearing capacity
I just got a new asphalt driveway installed by Economy and they were fantastic to work with. I had an interesting experience contracting them. Joseph came to my house shortly after I moved in back in 2019 and quoted the driveway. It was out of my budget at the time, so I ended up doing gravel. I'm embarrased to say I never even responded to his quote back then. I had forgotten about that and when embarking on the asphalt project again, I had found another couple of local contractors. One got me a quote about 2 weeks after visiting. I asked a follow up question and never got a response. Another got me a quote 2 MONTHS after visiting, and it was 3 times as high as the first. Because I was waiting so long for the 2nd quote, I searched my email for "asphalt" to see if maybe I missed it, and Joseph's quote from 2019 came up. It was significantly lower than the 1st quote I got (which makes sense because it was 2019), but even after coming out (not giving me a hard time about my lack of response from before) and getting me a quote in just a few days, he was still the lowest. Scheduling was easy and communication was clear. He called the day before they were scheduled to start and let me know that his new baby had come early, and he would not be able to be there, but his partner, Abi would run the work. I lined Abi out the next morning, and they were off to the races. He didn't miss a thing, communicated great, and did a great job. They knocked out a 4,000 SF driveway including a 250'L berm one one side in 2 days. It was clear that they took pride in their work, and they worked a really long day on day 2 to make sure everything was done well. Great work done by great people.
Joseph and the entire crew are the best you could possibly ask to do work for you or your buisness. They have done work at our shopping plaza in Everett two times now and the work is fast and holds up to the heavy use from our customers! When you consider a company that is reputable and honest you have to go with Economy Asphalt & Concrete LLC. Thanks Joseph!!
Josheph and his team did a great hob on two commercial parking lots, I can't recommend team highly enough. Dave
Economy Asphalt has done several projects for us. Their work is excellent, they are on-time and on-budget. The communication with them is very good and they follow through with what they say they will do. I highly recommend them.
I feel bad that I am just now posting this review! I was reminded yesterday by one of our condo owners, at a building in Snohomish where I have my business, that our experience with and results from Economy Asphalt were over the top! We had an eruption of water and clay in the middle of our back parking lot in January that Joseph and his team were able to quickly excavate, refill and repave a large area to prevent further eruptions. The building HOA will be using them again soon to complete repaving the lot. Great work and fairly priced!
As president of a cul de sac homeowner's association, the time arrived for me to gain support to seal coat and fill cracks in the development's private road. An investment of this size always brings significant scrutiny. Joseph was extremely helpful in answering my neighbors' questions and concerns prior to their approving the project. He was extremely helpful scheduling mutually acceptable time for the project. After his very professional crew completed the work, Joseph's exemplary customer service to finalize with some minor touch-up was most impressive. I give Economy Asphalt & Concrete my highest recommendation.
We just had our driveway asphalted today, Joseph gave us a great bid and they went above and beyond our expectations. They were early, took extra time to go over the work they did. They also recommended some work on the side of the driveway and took care of that in the same day. All the workers were professional and did a great job. I would highly recommend them. We will definitely be using them again in the future.
I would recommend Economy Asphalt to anyone & everyone! There service was prompt, their communication was fantastic and they went ABOVE & BEYOND what I expected. They poured a concrete floor in my garage & my barn and built a gravel driveway. I got bids from a few companies before I hired them and they were the most affordable of my quotes. I made a few last minute changes and they were able to to accommodate me with no problem. It's refreshing to find a company that is dependable, skilled and affordable. You won't be disappointed.
Joseph and his team did an excellent job replacing our asphalt driveway with concrete and paving our weed infested parking strip. They were communicative, efficient and did fantastic work. I would recommend to anyone looking for concrete and/or asphalt work.
Joseph was responsive, professional and timely. Tje quality of work was excellent. I highly recommend him.
We had our driveway redone by Economy and was extremely pleased with the result. We found few companies that did both concrete and asphalt. Of those that did, not all use rebar in concrete (which was a must for me). This was definitely an expensive project, but they not only came in at the lowest bid, but I was most pleased with their service and what they offered compared to others, so it was a no brainer!
Common Questions
In Seattle’s wet climate, popular driveway materials include:
- Permeable pavers: Excellent for water drainage
- Concrete: Durable and long-lasting with proper sealing
- Asphalt: Cost-effective and suitable for Seattle’s climate
- Stamped concrete: Attractive and durable with proper maintenance The best choice depends on budget, aesthetics, and specific property conditions. Many homeowners opt for permeable solutions due to Seattle’s focus on stormwater management.
Yes, in most cases you need a permit. Seattle requires:
- A Street Use permit for any work in the right-of-way (like the portion of the driveway that crosses the sidewalk)
- A construction permit for new driveways or significant alterations
- Compliance with Seattle’s Stormwater Code Always check with the Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections for the most up-to-date requirements.
Seattle’s hilly terrain presents unique challenges:
- Proper grading is crucial to ensure water runoff and prevent pooling
- Retaining walls may be necessary for steep slopes
- Special techniques might be required for pouring concrete on inclines
- Drainage systems are often more complex Experienced local contractors are familiar with these challenges and can design solutions accordingly.
The timeline for driveway installation in Seattle can vary:
- Small to medium residential driveways: 3-5 days
- Larger or more complex projects: 1-2 weeks
- Permeable paver driveways may take longer due to intricate installation This timeline includes removal of old material, site preparation, installation, and initial curing. Weather conditions can affect the schedule, especially during the rainy season.
Yes, eco-friendly options popular in Seattle include:
- Permeable pavers or pervious concrete for better stormwater management
- Recycled asphalt or concrete mixes
- Grass pavers for a green appearance with durability
- Locally sourced materials to reduce transportation emissions These options align with Seattle’s commitment to sustainability and often help with stormwater management.
Given Seattle’s wet climate, drainage is a top priority. Contractors typically:
- Design proper slopes and grading to direct water away from structures
- Install French drains or other subsurface drainage systems
- Use permeable materials to allow water infiltration
- Incorporate rain gardens or bioswales for natural water management
- Ensure compliance with Seattle’s stringent stormwater management regulations
Maintenance for Seattle driveways typically includes:
- Regular cleaning to prevent moss and algae growth
- Sealing concrete or asphalt driveways every 2-3 years
- Prompt repair of cracks to prevent water infiltration
- Ensuring proper drainage and clearing any debris from drainage systems
- For permeable surfaces, periodic cleaning to maintain water permeability
While Seattle’s winters are generally mild, they can impact driveway installation:
- Installation is typically avoided during the wettest months (November to February)
- Freezing temperatures, though rare, can affect curing times for concrete
- Winter installations may require special additives or techniques
- Contractors often recommend installation during the drier months (May to September) for optimal results If winter installation is necessary, experienced contractors will take appropriate measures to ensure quality results.
